Finding a large dog bed is easy enough, online or at your local pet store, but if you’re like me, the owner of a big dog, then I found myself procrastinating about the space it would take up and which style would be most suitable for my dog and then the whole memory foam dog bed thing, did she really need one as a healthy two year old.

The styles of large dog beds range from a pillow style, round or rectangular, to a donut or nest style. Then you have to consider the material inside the bed. If it’s just cheap stuffing then a large dog will crush it flat in no time and that leaves them pretty much just sleeping on the floor. After that we large dog owners have to consider the option of a memory foam dog bed.

It’s true that Vet’s recommend memory foam dog beds for elderly and arthritic dogs but did you know that they, and most large dog breeders, also recommend them for large dogs of any age. About 50% of pure breed large dogs are prone to hip dysplasia, breeds such as German Shepherds, Labrador Retrievers, Rottweillers, Golden Retrievers and Dobermans. Now maybe you’re thinking, like I did, that my dog show’s no signs of this debilitating disease but then my Vet told me that most large dogs don’t show symptoms until they’re middle aged! So offering my dog a memory foam dog bed where her joints are properly supported and good blood circulation is maintained around those joints became a no-brainer for me. Keeping her joints as healthy as possible would save us both a lot of grief in the long run.

The basic shape of a memory foam dog bed is rectangular although there are a few other options, like bolster styles and nesting type beds. It basically comes down to whether you’re dog likes to stretch out when they sleep of curl up when selecting the shape of the bed. My dog likes to mostly stretch out but will occasionally sleep curled up so I opted for the rectangular style with the bolster for a head rest.

So, at the end of the day, the issue of space and style took a backseat to getting her the proper support of a memory foam dog bed and best of all she loves it! She used to prefer the couch to her flattened out old dog bed and who could really blame her for that. Now she opts for her memory foam dog bed every time which leaves both of us happy, her because she has a comfortable place to sleep and me because I now have a fur-free place to sit!

Here is the list I put together while searching for the perfect memory foam dog bed. If you are in the market for a dog bed and are unsure of the exact size of bed your dog needs, see this useful Dog Bed Selector by Breed.

At first it can be confusing to see all the types and shapes of dog bed available and then choose one that’s appropriate for your dog. However your dog actually tells you what type of bed it wants every time it sleeps. You’ll find it will usually either curl up to some degree, or it will stretch itself out.

As such you should look for a dog bed that matches your dog’s sleeping style. For convenience the types of bed are listed according to the two different dog sleeping styles.

Curl Dog Beds

Pillow Dog Bed or Cushion Dog Bed. Usually round, square or rectangular in shape. Like with human pillows or cushions, they are soft. Most are stuffed with foam. Or foam and cedar chips. Cedar chips act as a flea repellent, however cedar chips may not be ideal for dogs with skin allergies.

Nest, Donut or Cuddler Dog Bed. These terms are often used interchangeably, although there are two distinct styles. Both are usually round or oblong in shape to accommodate the dogs body in a curl sleeping style. The edges are usually subtly raised in height in the cushion style beds or more pronounced and rigid in the enclosure style beds.

Bolster Dog Bed. Like the above enclosure style beds, except usually having more pronounced raised sides, hence the term bolster.

Dome Dog Bed. These are similar to a nest bed except they are fully enclosed at the sides and overheard apart from the one side that the dog will enter and leave the bed from.

Stretch Dog Beds

Dog Mat - square or rectangular in shape, suitable for a daytime resting place or to line an outdoor dog kennel. They are a step up from the dog sleeping on a cold and/or hard floor. They are usually made from a thin layer of foam. Memory foam is used in the more expensive mats for support.

Dog Mattress - like with a human bed mattress, a dog mattress is large and rectangular in shape. It’s designed to be a soft platform for dogs that like to stretch out as they sleep.

Specialty Beds

Designer Dog Bed or Luxury Dog Bed. These are designed as dog sized replicas of human furniture such as a bed or sofa. A sofa style is particularly good for your dog if he changes between curl and stretch sleeping styles as it provides room for the dog to stretch and raised sides for the dog to curl against. There are many great styles to choose from to enhance the decor of the room the bed is situated in. However bear in mind that the dog’s needs must come before decor.

Orthopedic Dog Bed. Orthopedic dog beds are designed for dogs suffering from arthritis or hip dysplasia, or dogs that are more at risk of suffering from hip dysplasia. Orthopedic dog beds come in a variety of the above forms. The difference is in the type of material use. They are designed Orthopedic dog beds are popularly lined with material called memory foam which is both sturdy and comforting at the same time thus helping to support the joints.

Heated Dog Bed. These come in the above forms and as the name suggests, a heating facility is provided. This is good for beds located in an area susceptible to colder temperatures, or may be considered as a desired feature in an orthopedic dog bed to keep the dog’s joints warm.

Travel Dog Bed. These come in many varieties, for example roll up mats, sleeping bags, house/cages. Obviously most are designed to be compacted when not in use. Many are machine washable. Some come with waterproof fabrics for outdoor use.

DON’T FORGET - The Size of the Dog Bed

The dog bed should be larger than the dog’s sleeping size so the dog has room to make itself comfortable and adjust itself as necessary while it sleeps. For the curl style beds you’ll want at least an extra 8 inches in diameter than the dog’s sleeping length and about an extra 12 inches for the stretch style dog beds.

Dog Bed Ramps

by admin on April 30, 2009

There are a variety of reasons why you may be considering dog bed ramps. It may be that your pet is getting a bit older and it not as agile as he used to be. Possibly your dog is a smaller breed and not able to jump up onto the bed. Whatever the reason, you will be sure to find a good selection of well made ramps that will fit in with your interior décor.

Very often you will find that you have a variety of designs to choose from. Some are gently sloping ramps that will fit along the foot of your bed and are the same length as the bed. These are usually solid sided and manufactured to furniture standards in wood. These are very practical as they are very easily accessible by your pet and you will sometimes find that they will actually like to lie on the ramp. It almost becomes an extension of your bed. Ramps such as these will sometimes have a safety guard along the edge so that you can be sure that your pet will feel secure and they will have little chance of taking a tumble. Many of these ramps are custom built and the manufacturer will sometimes be willing to take individual design elements into account. They will be carpeted and you will be able to choose a colour combination of wood and carpet that will complement your existing interior design.

Some dog bed ramps on the market are more flexible and portable. It is possible to buy one design which is free standing and has the capacity to adjust the height. This would not have solid sides or make such an attractive piece of furniture as those mentioned above, but would be very practical. They are very handy if you should need to move the ramp from the bed to the couch for example.

Probably the most economic dog bed ramp would be the simple ramp that has a specially designed hook at the end which will lock between the mattress and the bed base to ensure that it is secure. This ramp benefits from being lightweight and easy to store and is probably the lowest priced design.

Another option that you may consider, although it is not actually a dog bed ramp, is steps. Again these can be manufactured to a high standard to match your existing furnishings and are available in different sizes to suit your pet’s needs. Not only can they vary in height so that they are a convenient level for access to your bed, but also the size of the step area. Obviously if you have a large dog you will need a larger tread area.

As much as the design for a dog bed ramp will vary, so will the prices. You should be able to get a basic ramp for around $50. If you are looking for a wooden ramp made to furniture standards, you could pay $150 - $200. If, however, you are looking for a custom size, design and finish I guess that you could pay just about as much as you wish!

Comparing Dog Beds For Your Pet

by admin on April 28, 2009

Your dog deserves to sleep as comfortably as you do. Since there are millions of dog owners that agree with this philosophy, a variety of dog beds has been developed. All of them have advantages. When you begin shopping for dog beds, remember to consider all the options.

Dogs like to sleep on cushiony beds with plenty of support. They will wag their tails when they try their new orthopedic foam beds or coil spring dog beds. As an owner, you might even be generous enough to supply your dogs with pillow-top beds so that they can relax in bliss. An iron bed frame can make the mattress-style beds even more supportive.

Odor can be big problem for some dogs, but there are many beds that address this issue. Some have cedar bedding covered by foam and possibly a fleece lining for warmth. The cedar bedding also protects your pet from insects like fleas. Others can be put into the washing machine and thoroughly cleaned inside and out. You can remove the covers of some dog beds and wash them as well.

Oval pet beds can be hidden away in a corner so that your pet can enjoy an undisturbed nap. They come in a variety of fashionable colors and many of them have fleece linings. There are oval pet beds in sizes from extra small to extra large. If your pet has a special place of her own, select any bed that will fit in the space.

Some pets like to curl up in a tidy oval bed while others like to stretch out in roomy open dog beds. When you are comparing the different beds that are available, think about how your dog likes to sleep. Consider whether your dog is plagued by occasional fleas or odors. Then choose dog beds that seem to be a good fit for your dogs. They will bark for joy.

Buying Dog Beds

by admin on April 27, 2009

Dog beds come in many different shapes and sizes so you can be sure that you’ll be able to find something that is perfect for both you and your four legged friend. You can get soft beds, basked style beds and even special vet beds or orthopaedic beds if your dog is a bit older or recovering from an injury. Some types of dog beds are suited to different breeds, and most beds come in a variety of sizes, so it’s easy to find the right fit for your dog.

A popular type of dog bed is a pillow dog bed. This is just like a very large cushion for your dog to lie on and comes in a wide variety of finishes and sizes. These are probably best suited to larger dogs. They come in very large sizes and the simple design means they are easy to move around the house and the covers can easily be removed for washing.

If your dog is a smaller breed and prefers being warm and cosy then a good option would be to go for a plastic or basket style dog bed. This is a traditional style basket or plastic cradle to which you add a pad or cushion. These come in a variety of sizes and colours and give the added benefit of having sides so your dog can get really warm and snugly. The removable cushion also means you don’t have to replace the whole bed if the cover should become worn or the stuffing gets flat you can simply replace that part. Also a plastic basket can easily be wiped clean, allowing you to keep things nice and hygienic and cut back on that famous ‘doggy odour’. The sleeper dog bed, a plastic basket style bed, comes in sizes 1, 2, medium, large, extra large and giant. There are also a variety of colours to choose from. Seasons and Pennine make the mattresses for the different sized baskets and they also come in a choice of fabrics. Seasons also make a slumber bed - a soft sided basket style bed to which you can add a mattress.

If you prefer something completely soft and fabric based for your dog then there is plenty of choice. Dog duvets come in a wide variety of colours and finishes and are a simple bed, probably best suited to a larger dog that likes to sprawl. The Dog duvet is a nice thick mattress for your dog to lie on. Scruffs make many different types including faux suede ones, the ‘country’ style duvet in corduroy and tweed. Both of these have fully removable and machine washable covers. Scruffs also make the Expedition duvet which is 100% waterproof and can be hosed down with ease. All dog duvets come in a variety of sizes. If you’d like something a bit fluffier then opt for the Eskimo faux fur quilted dog duvet.

Ancol - a popular name in the pet world, make a huge variety of dog beds. This includes some very sweet covered dog beds that look like little fury covered kennels. They come in all sorts of different finishes from pink and fluffy to camouflage. Ancol also make a soft bed with cosy sides and a big plump removable cushion - almost like a special doggy sofa.

Animate make a sturdy fibre bed with a removable mattress but also have many fleece products including dog blankets and fleece duvets. They also make a fleece snuggle bed - this is an extra cosy bed, probably best suited to a smaller dog that likes to sleep curled up. The snuggle bed is a fleece cylinder shaped cushion that has slightly elevated sides for your little pet to snuggle into.

If you are looking for something very practical then consider buying a Vet bed. Again these come in a variety of sizes and have a dense fluffy pile that is machine washable and very durable. Vet beds make an ideal addition to your dog kennel or cage. However if you’d prefer to give your dog a bit of luxury then go for a Parklane dog bed from Scruffs. These smart beds come in three different sizes and three different finishes, including the Rochester model; a soft walled bed with fury lining and faux leather exterior! All Parklane beds have soft high walls and an extra comfy lining which is machine washable to 30°. The beds also have a matching pet carrier which can be purchased separately with harness clasp as well as detachable water bowl and they are a must have for the weary but stylish traveller!

Does Your Dog Really Need a Bed?

by admin on April 26, 2009

If you get your dog used to sleeping in one spot it’s less likely to sleep on the floor or other hard surfaces which can cause arthritis and calluses in later years. By observing your canine, you will have a better idea of what product to look for as his daily comfortable resting place.

Some Dog Bed Considerations

Have you ever considered you dog’s specific needs for comfortable rest? Does he sprawl and stretch out completely? Does he like to hang his head over the edge? Taking some of these questions into account will help you select the perfect dog bed for your pet.

Dog Bed Features and Benefits

Orthopedic foam holds its shape for a longer time and will not need to be replaced as often as beds with traditional polyfil or cedar chips. A dog bed allows your pet to have his own space, a place where he can curl up, relax and sleep. Beds with sides are great for dogs that like to hang their head over the edge as mentioned above.

Orthopedic beds are often a good choice for a senior canine as they are designed with special high-density foam for additional comfort and cushion for your dog’s aching bones and joints.

Similar to humans, dogs also experience changes as they age. Their joints can stiffen, or their bones become thinner. Older dogs enjoy sleeping more and playing less. There are medical reasons too, old achy bodies can mean a cranky pet so look for a dog bed with memory foam or a good orthopedic bed.

If you have a little dog a small round pillow-type bed could be ideal. It will let your little dog burrow down and nest. They come in a variety of styles, materials and colors and most can be thrown straight into the washing machine, but make sure the dog is not still in it :-). Make sure the bed is easy to clean and machine washable.

Make sure the bed is big enough for your dog. If he’s stretched out to his maximum, make sure the bed is big enough to support his entire body. Try measuring your dog and then add 5 inches to ensure a comfortable fit. If the bed’s too small then your dog will just not use it.

Some beds are also specifically treated to eliminate mold, fungus, or other outdoor hazards which may affect your dog. These dog beds are ideal if your dog sleeps outside a lot or if he sleeps in a dog house.

A strenuous day can mean an evening of discomfort with a pulled muscle or painful joints. Your dog will enjoy a high quality dog bed for all the same reasons that we enjoy our beds!

Back in the old days dogs were typically kept out in the yard to guard the house and would sleep in the kennels or in the garage. However over time things have changed. Now our pets are part of the family. An evenly large sized dogs will sleep inside especially in the winter when the temperatures get down below freezing. Whether you keep your dog inside or out here is how a heated dog bed can make a great difference for your pet.

What is the purpose of the heated dog beds

Now it’s easy to understand that if you keep your dog outside how a heated dog bed can come in handy. Heated dog beds can even work indoors as well during the winter months. Poppies especially can find comfort and security in their new heated bed especially if they have just been separated from their family. Older dogs especially love the heated mattress if they are suffering from joint aches or other types of joint condition such as arthritis.

There are also removable covers so that you can wash them if they get stained. You also need to ensure that the power cords are steel wrapped, this way it could save your pets life if they decided to chew on the power cord.

Pampering and that special comfort

Just like with you, sleep is an important factor. The same thing holds true with your pet. A good nights sleep for your pet will help his or her mood, health and their overall performance especially if they are old and are suffering from various diseases. A nice bed can provide comfort to your dog at whatever age. This is especially true when the winter months come, for just like us when we like to hide under the covers, a nice heated dog bed comforts our pets.

So pamper and comfort your pet, and show him or her that you love them. This way they understand that you are there for them, and that special little smile and wagging tail is just something special that you just can’t get enough of. So depending upon whether you keep your pet inside or out, whether he is young or old, try to treat your best friend with a little comfort. How to Pick the Best Dog Bed for Your Dog

by admin on April 23, 2009

You bring your cute, fun loving puppy home for the first time and of course you want your dog to sleep with you. All furry warm and snuggly. But that is not the best thing to do for you or your dog. You really need a dog bed and establish the correct behavior at the outset. Sure it’s fine now but when your dog grows to it’s full size at 100 lb, will it be such fun? If you adopted a dog from the pound it may actually prefer it’s own place. Somewhere to feel secure and safe.T

There are medical reasons too. If you get your dog used to sleeping in one spot it’s less likely to sleep on the floor or other hard surfaces which can cause arthritis and calluses in later years. Starting out correctly can help keep your dog fit and healthy. They even make orthopedic dog beds now to help address this issue.

Now that we have established that a dog bed is essential, what type do you get? It depends on your dog and it’s preferences. Make sure the bed is big enough for your dog. Even if it’s a perfect fit for your house its really important that your dog can lay down in the bed. If not then it’ll never be used. Next on the list of requirements is probably a chew proof bed, especially for puppies  There are multiple styles of dog bed, such as indoor or outdoor, heated or not, travel or car beds and as previously mentioned orthopedic beds for the older dog. Select one that fits your dogs needs and lifestyle.

Some things to consider are that the bed is totally machine washable. Both your dog and the bed are going to get dirty so you’ll be washing both regularly – though not at the same time. Fleas are a major consideration too and cedar shavings can help stop them becoming permanent residents.

Take a little time and put in a little effort and both you and your dog will get a great nights sleep and wake up refreshed and ready for the new day!
